In a restaurant, a waiter named Sarah gave the lunch menu to a struggling couple. Before looking at the menu, the man said, “Please bring us the two cheapest meals because we don’t have much money. We haven’t received our paychecks for months, and we’re going through a tough time.”
Sarah didn’t think for long. She suggested two dishes, and they agreed without hesitation. After they finished eating, they asked for the bill. Sarah came back with a small piece of paper and wrote: “I have paid your bill from my own money because I understand your situation. This is a gift of $100 from me, and this is the least I can do for you. Thank you for coming. – Sarah”
The couple left the restaurant feeling very happy.
Even though Sarah was also going through hard times, she felt joy after paying the couple’s bill. For almost a year, she had been saving money to buy a washing machine because her old one made washing clothes difficult.
Later, Sarah’s friend found out what happened and scolded her for spending her savings on others instead of buying the washing machine she needed.
While Sarah was thinking about this, her mom called her and said loudly, “Sarah, what did you do?”
Scared, Sarah replied in a shaky voice, “I didn’t do anything. What happened?”
Her mom said, “Facebook is praising you everywhere! The man and his wife posted a message about how you paid their bill, and many people have shared it. I’m so proud of you!”
As soon as Sarah finished talking to her mom, a friend called to say her story was going viral on all social media platforms.
When Sarah opened her Facebook account, she found hundreds of messages from TV producers and reporters asking to meet her and talk about her kind action.
The next day, Sarah appeared on one of the most famous TV shows. The show’s host gave her a luxurious washing machine, a new TV, and $10,000. She also received a $5,000 voucher from an electronics company. Gifts kept coming, and the total amount of money she received for her kind act became more than $100,000.
The two meals, which cost only a few dollars, changed her life.
True generosity is not giving something you don’t need, but giving something you need to someone who needs it more.
